Our Beloved Gym – Starting in the Right Foote!
As Ms Sheck and Mr Langer open the doors of the strength and conditioning room for the year, determined students dressed in red and black Brentwood gear swarm in the gym like a colony of ants. The Foote Center’s beloved gym is personally my favorite facility on the campus. Not only does the gym have spectacular equipment for us diligent athletes, the positive atmosphere nurtured by our great S&C faculty creates an inclusive environment for all, allowing students of all ages to work out comfortably. Moreover, with the help of our maintenance staff, the Brentwood community does a phenomenal job at maintaining the S&C room shipshape throughout the whole year. Many students at Brentwood take advantage of this facility and devote many hours to working out and lifting weights as a means of self-development.
The Brentwood gym is a place where students take initiative as no one but yourself can tell you to go hit the gym. Nonetheless, Brentwood students always fill up the weight room which shows the diligence of our community. Some may ask, “How do we manage to work out so often having such a busy tripartite schedule (Academics/Arts/Athletics) at school? Well, my roommate Kaelin D, Whittall ‘23, who is truly dedicated to bodybuilding, will tell you that “It is all about these gains. Working out every day is a crucial part of my daily schedule and I stay productive during classes and prep time to stay on top of my classes ”. Students take responsibility and pride every day, as well as set reasonable goals for themselves to be consistent in the gym without letting their busy schedules get the best of them.
This year, the S&C team has put in many hours to introduce a series of new programs for the students who thrive to become better athletes. Each is allotted to a sport-specific program that gives us a well-rounded workout schedule throughout the year. Not only is this program a great resource for the new students who are just starting out, but it also helps many of our advanced athletes to focus on the specific details for each workout to keep us safe using heavy weights in the gym. Edwardo S, Whittall ‘24 is a new student this year who has shown great dedication in the gym so far. He mentioned, “This program introduced me to squatting and I am delighted to have the Brentwood faculty help me with my form!”
As a student at Brentwood who has spent countless hours in the gym, I am beyond grateful for the opportunities that this gym has given me throughout my high school years. It has taught me many life skills such as the importance of being productive and, most importantl,y it has sparked my passion for working out.
