Recognizing Black Visual Artists

The slideshow below was presented by Chloe E, Micheala DCG and Mr Luna at assembly on Thursday February 24th as part of the school’s celebration of Black History Month.

Today’s “Beyond the Brentwood Bubble” celebrates Black History Month by calling attention to the role of artists of color in creating culture and community. For over a century, the accepted outline of art history as we know it has marginalized the contributions of black artists, leaving them out of textbooks, art galleries, and museum collections. This has begun to change through the efforts of artists and scholars whose labors bring together art and identity with community and social change. In doing so, they have not only challenged art history, but worked to transform the stories we create to define our lives today. In an effort to honor these commitments, our slide show aims to present not only images, but the voices of the artists themselves highlighting their experience and intention.
