Remarkable Results Rock a Rugby Rivalry
On May 7th the Torches, on the Brentwood Rugby Fields, triumphed. The girls rugby team from Brentwood’s biggest rival school, Shawnigan Lake, arrived on our home soil ready to walk by with an easy win.
The rivalry this season consists of two previous games, one won by Brentwood and one by Shawnigan. This tie was about to be broken with crushing tackles, resilient rucks, and tricky trys.
The Brentwood girls’ passion and determination beamed from their faces just like the hopeful sun scorched down onto the campus. As Mr. Patel would observe, “These girls have grit”. Brentwood was about to create an impressive win with a comeback.
Individual efforts along with remarkable teamwork, fitness, and preparation made the finishing score of 17-10 possible. Ciel A, Nambi M and Jennifer L tackled and rucked their way to a stellar job on defence. An incredible conversion was made by Lauren A, along with two nail-biting tries scored by Nambi M and Avi S.
The most commendable try was snatched up by Shannyn O who got possession of the ball just meters from Brentwood’s try line, and, with extreme pace, raced for it towards the Shawnigan end zone. Not a breath was to be heard as spectators watched wide-eyed, waiting for a tackle or any form of an obstacle to come at her.
It didn’t.
Not one of Shawnigan’s fifteen players could swipe a palm on Shannyn as she dashed along the side of the field and touched down past the try line. That’s one for the books.
The rest of the game spirits were running high and hopeful. Ball movement flowed in through the backs and the forwards kept solid and in control. This was a hard-fought game with both rivals putting in all they had.
A big ‘Thank You’ goes to the coaches for making us champions. We could not have done it without Mr. Felix, Mr. Cowie, & Mr. Burrows (who was unable to make it to the game today but the skills he taught us were present every second of the game).
