Ross Cup Victory: Ice Hockey Comes to an Exciting Close

History was made for Brentwood’s Ice Hockey program as the Varsity team managed to overcome their rivalry against St. George’s School by beating them for the first time ever, and by winning the Ross Cup. For the first time in its 17 year history, the Ross Cup was awarded to Brentwood on Saturday, February 27. The tournament started on Friday morning with a tough game against Frances Kelsey that ended in a tie. Then we played Kitsilano and lost in a tough 6-4 game. Next we were on to a game against Shawnigan Lake School that we won by a 5-3 margin. These games put us in 3rd place as we approached the semifinal round. Here, with sore legs, we played St. George’s; we were motivated to succeed. At halftime, we were down by a goal; we then came back fighting. The game finished 5-1, as we scored 5 unanswered goals in the second half. St. George’s was the same team we embarrassingly lost to in the annual Saville Cup Showcase, and we were not going to let that happen again. The win against St. Georges put us into the finals. Brentwood had only been in the finals of the Ross Cup once before, which sadly ended in a loss by shootout. With the odds against us after losing to Kitsilano once before, we approached that game nervously, but hopeful that we could win. We started the game by getting a quick goal, followed shortly thereafter by a goal by Kitsilano. Then we turned on the gas and returned with two more nice goals by Xander A, ’17. The rest of the game was spent on the defensive side, and we managed to hold on until an empty net goal by Thomas H, ’17 put us up 4-1 with just seconds left. It was at that moment when the puck went into the empty net that we knew we had just won the Ross Cup. The Ross Cup has always been an emotional and exciting event for Ice Hockey at Brentwood as it marks the end of our season, and to some of the graduating students, it is the last hockey they will play for a long while. Winning the Ross Cup was a perfect and prideful end to my three year Brentwood Ice Hockey career, as well as the careers of the rest of the Grade 12s. “What a perfect way to end our time in Brentwood Hockey” quipped Denver S, 16 Assistant Captain.
