Self-Discovery Through Art

As the school year winds down, Art Foundations students are embarking on one last meaningful project. This culminating piece challenges each student to explore and express their identity through a variety of artistic media – ultimately tasking them with the major question of Who Am I? With a focus on self-expression and creative risk-taking, the project serves as both a personal journey and a celebration of one’s life adventures.

After months of developing their technical skills, experimenting with materials, and pushing their creative boundaries, students are now given the opportunity to let go of expectations and create something that is entirely their own. They have the chance to synthesize all they’ve learned throughout the year into a piece that comes from the heart.

Students have the freedom to choose a form of art that best represents their story and identity. Some may craft together collages, use their initials to tell a story, or even opt to create a self-portrait. Basma J, Allard ‘25 shares that “I really enjoy this project because it gives me a lot of freedom to create what I want”. That sense of independence and ownership is one of the most important parts of this assignment.

Whether expressed through visual art, words, or even a blend of both, this project serves as more than just an assignment – it’s an opportunity for self-discovery and growth as an artist or as Ms. Cappelletto, Art Foundations teacher, would describe it “a way to represent yourself”.
