Senior Boys Rugby – Countdown to Provies

Putting your body on the line.

Continuing to fight in any environment, whether it be a sweltering 30 degree heat or a chilling downpour in which every drop hits your skin with an icy burn.

And, most of all, enjoying it.

These are the expectations of the 30 players in Senior Boys Rugby as they prepare for their much anticipated Provincials this week. A game like no other on campus, like no other on the planet, Brentwood’s Rugby Program has fostered a unique culture in which every player has a key role. “It’s impressive that, with such a large team, everyone is always expected to play their part and does so with no complaints.” remarks Will C, Rogers ‘23. “Even the injured players are always working hard to take photos, help with drills, or move the equipment. They are just as important as any one of the players on the field.”

A testament to that united culture was exhibited on May 23, as the entire rugby team returned back to campus a day early from their Midterm Break to get one solid day of practicing before their Island Finals. “The benefits of coming back a day early are twofold,” explained Mr Thompson, Head Coach of the team. “It gets everyone back into the structure of school a day early while simultaneously allowing ourselves a full day with no conflicts to focus on what we need to do to be a provincial-level team.”

The boys have already earned a berth to Provincials with a dominant win over Port Alberni. They face Robert Bateman in Abbotsford on Wednesday in their opening game.

A special thank you goes out to Mr Tompson, Mr Flynn, and Mr Branchflower for their dedication and support in coaching the team. This year’s Senior Boys are a special, hardworking group that will, without a doubt, look back on the work they put in on the Gillespie Field and smile.
