Senior Boys Soccer 1

If you told me that a certain group of 26 individuals were enroute to make school history, I would’ve called you crazy. This soccer season the Senior Boys struggled through adversity from the very beginning of the season.

Back in September, this team was already rewriting the books, visiting St George’s for the ISA tournament. Early on, the team managed to plow their way through West Point Grey, Shawnigan, and the hosts, securing us a spot in the final. Playing WPG in the final, again, wasn’t as easy as we initially thought, but fueled by Church’s Chicken, the boys were ready to go. Down 1-0 before the half, the boys were able to make a comeback sparked by Chris S and his renowned halftime speech and led by Jack R, with a superb finish at the 87th minute. Jack went on to win the tournament MVP. In the end, Brentwood managed to put away WPG, once again, and achieved a 1st place finish for the first time in the decade.

As the season went along, the team found their groove, with goals being scored by almost every man on the roster, but things started to look grim at North Islands. Playing with anything but a full roster, it was a full team effort that got us through to the next round. Sparked by Ben O finding the back of the net, Brentwood was able to land yet another 1st place finish and qualify for a spot at Islands.

Having Islands take place during midterm meant that the team would have to rely on grit and joy – and some juniors – to qualify for provincials. With a struggle to fill our roster, a couple of our youngins were able to come to play and help us on our historic mission. They stepped up big time when we needed them most. Beating Isfeld, Brooks, and Stellys, the team finished 3rd at Islands. This meant that the team would travel to provincials for the 4th consecutive year.

A chilly Sunday afternoon saw the Brentwood boys traveling in style – in suits – because, as I said, “It’s a business trip.” The fellas felt and looked good. Pool play came and a 3-1 win, 2-0 loss, and a 3-0 win secured the top spot in the pool for the first time in school history. Coming out on top in the pool immediately meant a top 4 finish, which is another school record. The following two games were rough, but we walked away with a 4th place finish. We want to thank Mr Barrett, Mr Reynolds, Mr Veenema and everyone else involved with this season’s success because thanks to them we were able to accomplish what we did.
