Senior Speech Semifinals: An Oration Sensation 1

Last Tuesday’s senior speech competition in the Lecture Theatre featured a lively and entertaining cast of orators. The Grader 11s spoke on a plethora of fascinating subjects. Sarah F, Mack ‘17, presented a sceptical view on the claims of 3D printing futurists, while Jared L, Rogers ‘17, criticized the legalization of marijuana and its effects on Colorado drivers. Grade 12 students’ speeches were just as diverse, from Emily L’s, Mack ‘16 discussion about the inequality of healthcare between provinces, to Alex R’s, Privett ‘16 dire warning that neckties are conspiring to strangulate the world’s “formal men.” I noted the inherent failings of families and argued for the necessity of replacing parents with machines. The evening was informative, hilarious, and at times inspirational. When the applause died down, two victors emerged: Nicole C, Mack ‘17, will represent Grade 11 with her speech about defying expectations, and Caitlin W, Mack ‘16, will represent Grade 12 with her speech on the persistence of artists in times of struggle.
