Set, Spike, Hit! Senior A Volleyball is Well Underway!

With two months of volleyball, the girls have had a jam-packed first term. A great deal of work has been put into this season by the team, and, as a result, a lot of action has ensued. The term has been a whirlwind of activity, including early morning trips across the water to Vancouver, getting lost en route to Dover Bay, and hosting two major tournaments on our home court: the Brentwood Classic and ISAs.

First up, we had the Brentwood Classic. The girls were ready, from planning hairdos to organizing what jerseys we wore, everyone was locked in. We did our pregame routines of sharing a star and wish, as well as our shake out; this calms our nerves and gets energy up. On Friday, the team delivered a strong start with two impressive wins against Royal Bay and Magee. Though we fell short in the last game of pool play against Saint Thomas Aquinas, a team ranked third in the AA division. We earned a spot in the championship side of the bracket. “I thought it was a fun day with good improvement. Our passing was good and the energy was high,” said Irene T, Mack ‘27.

Saturday morning brought a tough loss against NDSS, but the girls got back up ready to play the next game. Facing a familiar opponent, Isfeld, we secured a win with two straight sets to end the game. “This shows the improvement that we have had throughout the season, since we previously lost to this Isfeld team a few weeks ago,” said Mr Jaden Ma, Coach and Ellis House BFA. We finished 7th out of 16 teams, and the tournament provided valuable, high-level experience leading into the more challenging ISAs.

Going into ISAs, everyone knew this was going to be a challenging weekend as we faced off against top teams like the ranked AA West Point Grey Academy and the 6th-ranked AAA, York House. After these tough losses to two powerhouse teams, the support from our peers helped us bounce back.

Coming into a match against Collingwood, we were all fired up, maybe a little too fired up. After a very strong start in the first set, we found ourselves going into a third set with Collingwood, eventually leading to another challenging loss. Right away, the team went against South Pointe, with whom they also went into an intense third set, and came out on top with the win.

This win placed us in the game for 7th and 8th against Mulgrave. Fueled by a good night’s sleep and a can of Yerba Mate, the team harnessed their energy and excitement to win in two straight sets. They secured their final placement of 7th out of 10 teams, defining ISAs as a weekend of growth and competitive spirit.

The team is now in playoffs and heading to North Islands, where we are sacrificing our hard earned midterm break to hopefully qualify for Islands next week. “We are really hoping we can perform well at North Islands even though we are missing some important players,” shares Katie J, Captain, Mack ‘26. They will continue to work hard for a chance to make it to provincials at the end of November.
