Snowball: A Night to Shine

The chill in the air has once again returned to Mill Bay, biting at our fingertips and eliciting a rosy complexion among students rushing between buildings as they race to make their next class. The evergreens surrounding Brentwood stand wrapped in an eerie fog, while the ocean reflects the grey skies. On campus, the mood has taken on a multifaceted nature – while tensions continue to build due to looming deadlines, in concert with fatigue, that has taken charge of our community- our spirit remains high.

Winter Break is now upon us bringing with it the promise of a well-earned rest and time with our loved ones during the holiday season. Our community’s spirit was not only fuelled by this upcoming break but also by a renowned highlight of the year – Snowball.

Snowball is one of the most anticipated events of the year. Crooks Hall is transformed into a winter wonderland with elegant decorations and shimmering lights, creating a festive atmosphere that takes hold of the student body.

We arrive in our finest attire, ready to enjoy a formal dinner with amazing food. Snowball provides us with the chance to remember why this time of year is so wonderful and to celebrate how far we have come. From the moment students walk into Crooks Hall their faces light up, and suddenly “The stress of schoolwork melts away and instead is replaced with laughter and joy” states Grad Captain Youto I, Whittall ‘25.

After the dinner, we were supplied with dazzling entertainment by a hypnotist. The show was fantastic with numerous students volunteering to head up to the stage to be hypnotized. The theatre was filled with laughter and amazement as the hypnotist guided them through hilarious suggestions, from pretending to play guitar, to giving a speech as a disgruntled elf. Savannah J, Alexandra ‘25 one of the few lucky students to be hypnotized, said “I was so excited to get chosen to go up as it is my last year, and it was a great experience I will never forget!”

The entire night is truly something special, from start to finish. My favourite part is getting ready alongside all my friends, as our dorm rooms come alive with music and laughter, and we all frantically do our makeup, pick out outfits, and help each other perfect every detail. Once we are ready, we move on to the tradition of taking photos, where we timelessly capture the night along with the smiles and joy of being together, granting us the opportunity to never forget these magical moments. It is through these times that we strengthen our preexisting bonds as we immerse ourselves in the anticipation of what is to come.

Thank you to everyone who helped put this event together, including Brentwood’s Grad Council and SAC for spending countless hours preparing and setting up, and to the Food Services team who prepared an incredible meal! However, a special thanks goes out to Ms Ramsay, our SAC Sponsor, who is “the driving force behind Snowball, and whose hard work and dedication continually shine through setting a brilliant example for our entire community” says Hope Assistant Houseparent, Ms Carroll.
