Spirit Week – Nine days of Non-Stop, Never-Ending Fun

This past week at Brentwood has been an absolutely marvelous experience, as Ms McLean and the SAC put together nine days of fun-packed activities and events. Despite the challenges in putting together such a complicated and perfect string of functions, those in charge successfully kept the student body excited and refreshed.

Every day had a range of themes, offering students the ability to display their creativity and style from “Why do I own that?” day, where Brentwood brought out their most dubious and rare attire, to “Tacky Tropical Tourist” day, where the campus was full of Hawaiian shirts, khaki shorts, and sunglasses – despite the chilly weather. I’m fairly certain that we did not have to wear the uniform a single time this week, which is surprising but undoubtedly a huge plus of Spirit Week.

In addition to the consecutive clothing themes, Spirit Week brought a wave of new meals to Crooks Hall. These included UK and USA Dinners and many snack-making activities such as S’mores, cotton candy, and candy apples. These feasts, although challenging for anyone trying to diet peacefully at Brentwood, were fantastic. The kitchen staff has always been a beacon of hard work and positive attitudes, and I would like to thank them on behalf of everyone at Brentwood for their efforts.

To tie all of these activities together, a ton of Interhouse activities were added to the mix, adding a great deal of competitive spirit. Starting off with Dodgeball and a Rap Battle, the Foote Center was lively and a bit more musical than usual. Then came the Video Game Tournament and Giant Jenga, which brought flocks of people to the McNeill Center to watch Smash Bros. experts duke it out on the Nintendo Switch. After the Egg-drop competition, painting, the finals of Cornhole, the score leaves Hope/Privett in First, ahead of Mack/Ellis by seven points. The rankings are tight, and the struggle to come out on top is far from over, but every house has a shot at winning.

To wrap up Spirit week, Java Hut came in as it does every year and absolutely crushed it in the entertaining department. 19 acts went on stage and, after weeks or even months of practice, gave a stunning performance. As Nicole L said a few minutes before going on stage, “Everyone loves Java Hut; it doesn’t matter if you’re good or bad, as long as you have fun, everyone’s happy.” My personal favorite was Jacob H, Mark L, and Tommy M’s original ironic song on the struggles we private school students face at Brentwood. Their delivery of comedy, musical ingenuity and passion was flawless and will be remembered for years to come.

As always, the SAC and those involved in organizing events such as Spirit Week deserve extensive praise, and their willingness to put in the hours of effort required to pull off such a fantastic experience at Brentwood is much appreciated.
