Strong Showing at Cross Country Provincials

On Saturday November 6th, nine members of the Brentwood Cross Country team attended the BC Provincial Cross Country Championships. The race was held in Jericho Beach, Vancouver with over 1000 athletes from across BC in attendance. Brentwood runners faced a muddy, winding course with sharp turns. Greeted with less than ideal, rainy conditions, the athletes were prepared to get dirty.

Despite the arduous circumstances, our runners performed well. One notable performance was Luise H, Hope ‘24. Out of over 200 runners in her race, she came 18th in the province. Her results put her in a good position for next year’s provincials. Our other runners also proved themselves in a good position for the future of our cross country team.

Because of the unfavourable weather, mud coated the shoes and legs of the runners as they crossed the finish line. All the athletes had to leap through large puddles and deep mud during the race. As Neve M, Hope ‘23, put it, “The course was really flat, but it was the mud that made it difficult.” There seemed to be constant rain throughout the day which definitely added to the complexity of the course. Many trips and falls were destined to happen in these conditions. Nevertheless, the grit of the runners was exhibited through finishing the race with strong and determined attitudes.

As this was the first provincial level race for the majority of us, the pressure was endured by all our runners. Captain Edward L, Privett ‘22, led us through the nervousness with his never-ending motivation and positivity. Edward explains that provincials “Were a great success” and “The memories will last forever”.

The team was delighted to race in Vancouver in a brand new style of competition. All of us left the event with feelings of pride and accomplishment. The Brentwood Cross Country team definitely has the potential to place even better in the coming years. Thanks to Mrs Reynolds and Mr Skardal for their tremendous support all season long.
