Swing and Success: The Senior Tennis North Island Win!

It was a blissfully sunny day on April 21 when the Senior Tennis team took on four of the top tennis teams on the north end of Vancouver Island: Gulf Islands, Shawnigan, Powell River and Queen Margaret’s School.

The team started off bright and early playing the first round of matches against Queen Margaret’s. In BC School Sports, each round consists of eleven matches, and whoever wins six out of eleven wins the total round. Our team came out strong and won eleven out of eleven matches. The environment was supportive and filled with excitement as we all enjoyed the weather and the competition playing out in front of us.

Our next round was against Powell River, where the team swept the matches again. This time around, we focused on our net play, making sure to attack and poach at the right time. Doubles player Stella P, Alex ‘25, said “ Our team needs to play more matches and North Islands is the perfect time to get the competition experience”.

Our third round was against a strong team from Shawnigan Lake. In the past, our two teams have battled back and forth, so this was going to be a challenge. We started strong, winning all of our doubles games and our boy’s singles. Our girls singles and mixed doubles was a close-fought battle with us just coming short, 4-6. Regardless of the loss, we ended up winning nine of the eleven matches, taking our round.

Our final round was against Gulf Islands, and it was one to remember! After winning ten out of eleven matches, the team gathered to watch Yuichiro M, Ellis ‘27, play his singles match against a ranked player in B.C. This was a tightly contested match with driven rallies and excellent shots and it was incredibly entertaining. Captain Sophia D, Hope ‘24 and Captain Morgan M, Rogers ‘24 agreed saying it was the “Match of the day!”. The team gathered post-tournament for dinner, reconnecting after a long day of fun and hard work. Head of Tennis, Coach Hobbs stated she was “proud of the team effort and dedication shown”. Coming up next is our Showcase tournament, Islands, where we are hoping to get a b4rth to Provincials. Hope to see you there Brentwood!
