The Allard Reef

The Allard Reef

15 August 2024Eliza Phillips, Allard House Captain

On September 5, 2023, 20 new mermaids joined Allard, flooding the reef with eagerness & anticipation. Working alongside the returning mermaids, we did what Allard does best: form a community. Topping our reef off with 65 students, the Prefects & I were excited to try our hands at keeping Allard’s culture alive. From the tradition of roses with the Rogers boys after Fun & Games, to hearing the 11s oddly accurate interpretation of the Prefects in our Grade Performances before Winter Break, Allard’s enthusiasm never wavered, embodying our three pillars: we are Strong, Caring & Accepting.

Allard is home to committed, lighthearted, & attentive individuals. The 9s, a small but mighty group, are constantly spreading kindness. The 10s have ever-entertaining energy that radiates throughout the reef. 11s are a closely-knit, caring group, who will become outstanding Prefects. Above all, the 12s are resilient leaders whose determination & initiative have shaped a powerful coherent house.

Finally, the pulse of Allard is the adults who keep our mermaids swimming: our duty staff. Ms Backlund, Ren Ren, Ms Coull, & Ms Stevens bring life to prep & constantly support the house. The BFAs, Ms Foreman & Ms Crookshank, keep our home running, doing all the behind-the-scenes work, but never miss a long chat on the circle couch. Mr Smith, our Assistant Houseparent – & hidden poet – never failed to nourish us with fresh bread on Tuesdays & make us look forward to Saturday House Meetings just to hear his original work. He has taught us to do everything 100% – it’s a work day, after all. Ms Rogers, our Houseparent, the rock of Allard, has taught us to be advocates & use our voices. Her love & support are shown to every mermaid.

Allard has been my second home from the moment I stepped off the bus from Quarantine Hotel in Grade Nine. It has shaped who I have become & I am eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to grow up in the reef, surrounded by the love of my second family.

Swim free.
