This year, Brentwood Basketball brought our group of seventeen junior boys together. Even though we were not able to enjoy a competitive season and compete for Island dominance, the Junior Boys Basketball team was able to experience a season, one quite like no other.

It began with a brush-up of fundamentals, but the focus quickly shifted to the “Brentwood way” of basketball. New and returning players spent time studying and practicing the signature Brentwood offence and defence, running both motion and horns until we could do it blindfolded.

We all felt very fortunate to be able to be in a space where we could improve and play the game, yet every player on the team yearned for a competitive season. Long ferry rides and hotel sleepovers were missed. Second-year player Avik B, Privett ‘22 remarked that “It was really tough not to have those times with the boys. Those are the moments where we truly become a team.”

Despite this, we worked hard. Brentwood Grit. And that work, put in over the season, on and off the court, was not in vain. On the final day of practice Coaches Sullivan and Warner each drafted an 8 man team for a final scrimmage. We were granted our competitive wish. The game was an absolute battle with Team Warner walking away from the first quarter with a 10 point lead. After a second-half comeback by Team Sullivan, the game remained knotted and we went to OT. Throughout the first overtime, the teams stayed even and it wasn’t until Anton S, Rogers ‘23 hit two big free throws in double overtime to win the game for Team Sullivan. Brentwood Joy.

Everyone was delighted with the scrimmage. Jaxon M, Rogers ‘23 stated that “Just to be out on the court again felt amazing. It made me excited for the years to come.”

All of the boys would like to thank Coaches Sullivan, Warner and Pasquale for an amazing season. Even though it was not the one we all dreamed of, it was one we all enjoyed.
