The Debaters

This term has been crazy busy for the Debate and Model UN crew and we have a lot to show for it. We started off with a Pizza Debate at Oak Bay High in Victoria for some practice. It was a lovely evening with talented debaters and clever points brought up from both sides and close final point totals. After the debates, the pizza was brought out and quickly consumed by hungry competitors.  The debate program has found itself very involved with the University of Victoria recently. Some debaters participated in a training workshop at the university where they were mentored by members of the UVic Debate Club.  After the beginning of term training, the program made its way to Regionals at Glenlyon Norfolk in Victoria. Regionals led up to the Showcase Debate at Fort Tectoria where the resolution was “This House would adopt a digital currency.” Although there were no winners or losers, there was plenty of commentary from the crowd and it really cast an intelligent light on the Brentwood community.  Another highlight for Brentwood was The Scholars’ Cup in which our debaters did nothing but succeed. Too many debaters to mention have qualified for another round in Bangkok. There are 33 seniors and three juniors from our school who are invited to go. Not only is that exciting but, there is also a possibility of a trip to Prague this July for 10 of our students. Provincials were also a success in Vancouver as ten of our debaters qualified. All of the Brentwood debaters scored in the top third out of 200.  Leading that success were Kavi G, Whittall ‘17 and his teammate Afyz M, Privett ‘17 who placed 3rd in British Columbia and have qualified for provincials. It has been yet another terrifically successful term for this program. You can’t argue with that! Georgia P, Mackenzie ‘16
