The Fight for ‘Provies’

As the third term rolls in at Brentwood, the campus is buzzing with excitement, and it’s not just because of the warmer weather. The women’s rugby team is gearing up for a season of challenges and hopefully, triumphs.

The journey began with a fierce encounter against Isfeld (an AA school in our provincial pool) where every try counted towards a coveted spot at provincials. Despite a narrow defeat, the team showcased their resilience and determination in what Captain Tatum L, Hope ‘24 described as a “promising first game”, proving that Brentwood is a force to be reckoned with on the field.

Next up was a showdown against Vanier, a AAA team with a formidable lineup, including some Team BC players. While the result didn’t tip in Brentwood’s favour, the margin was slim, a testament to the team’s hard work and improvement. As Mr Cowie aptly put it, “This is the best the team has been in a long time”, and their progress is nothing short of impressive.

But it’s not just about the senior games. The women’s rugby program has a lot of new faces this year, which gives opportunities like the Shawnigan scrimmage. These development games are important to nurture the talent that will carry the Brentwood rugby legacy forward. With many of our players graduating this year, it’s essential to invest in the development of younger athletes. Standing on the sidelines of this scrimmage, our senior players were cheering and supporting our juniors. Sophia S told me after one particularly amazing tackle from our girls that this was “So awesome”. I definitely agree.

As the stakes get higher and the competition fiercer, Brentwood’s women’s rugby is poised to fight tooth and nail for a spot at provincials. With each game, we’ll continue to learn, grow, and inch closer to the ultimate goal. So, buckle up, because this season promises thrills, spill, and, hopefully, a shot for glory.
