The First Sunday in October

Altruism is a value that is proudly upheld by Brentwood students. This is made evident throughout the year, be it up and down Mill Bay Road during the annual Terry Fox Run, in the Bunch Theatre selling hand-woven, Peruvian textiles to support MOSCUO, or around campus as students strive to be good citizens in the Brentwood community. One of the most moving examples of altruism demonstrated by Brentwood students is when runners and walkers roll out of bed early on a Sunday morning (our only REAL weekly sleep in) hop on a bus to Victoria, and go run for a cure.

On October 2, the Canadian Breast Cancer Society will be hosting its 20th annual Run for the Cure, and just like every year for the past eight, Brentwood students and faculty alike will be participating in the Run. To these dedicated participants, this event is more than just a five-kilometer run around Saanich: it is a time to remember those who have left us, to contribute to the cause, and to come together to achieve a common goal.

The purpose of the Run is to raise awareness and funds for the cause, and Brentwood makes admirable contributions, raising tens of thousands of dollars each year. A goal is set by Mrs. Felix, who organizes the school’s participants with the help of the Mackenzie House Captain, and each year the established goal is surpassed. This reflects not only the students’ commitment, but also their understanding of how important it is to eradicate such a horrible disease.

Events around the school such as Pink Day, where anyone can pay two dollars to dress in their best pink, performances at assembly made by students, an appearance made by a Brentonian who tells their personal story of breast cancer and how it has affected their life have all become traditions affiliated with the Run for the Cure. These activities and efforts generate awareness and give students the chance to become a part of a movement that is changing the world.

An ideal world is a world without cancer, and Brentwood students can’t achieve this without a little bit of your help. Online donations made by parents and alumni are what brings Brentwood to its goal. Large or small, they make an incredible difference, and bring us one step closer to finding a cure for breast cancer.
