There’s Snow Place Like Brentwood

After a peculiarly warm and dry October and November, the first significant snowfall of 2022 was highly anticipated by all on campus. With about two weeks until the well-deserved Winter Break, November 29th was the perfect preview, particularly for our international students who live equatorially, of what a winter wonderland at Brentwood looks like.

Snow blanketed the campus and, safe to say, students found it impossible not to stare out the classroom windows in awe of the picturesque panorama all around.

As soon as the first snowflake fell, Grade 12 students were already planning how to make the most out of this wintry day in their spare blocks. Sophie H, Mack ‘23, Ella S, Alex ’23, Zander L & Oscar L Ellis ‘23 and I, for instance, immediately scrounged up whatever sled-like item we could find, rushed off to the steepest hill on campus, and over and over again, coasted down it until our fingers were icicles. Sophie exclaimed, “This is making me so excited for skiing!” and everyone agreed.

Hence, this snowfall is a sneak peek for Snow Buses and Winterlude, Brentwood traditions where everyone has the chance to make the most of the Island’s Mount Washington, where every Sunday keen students can catch a bus to ski, snowboard, and tube. Late January will also feature Winterlude, a midweek ski day for all students and staff.

November 29th was not only an exhilarating time for students, but also for staff, and even staff members’ dogs. Mr. DeSandoli, math teacher and Hope Assistant Houseparent, took the opportunity to explore the snowy campus with his dogs: Renzo, Frankie, Carmella, and Roma. They were just as excited about the snow as everyone else, evident by their joyous galloping and chasing of snowflakes on Campbell Common.
“Being at a boarding school when it snows is truly special as it is amazing to see how 17 & 18-year-olds get equally excited, like kids even ten years younger ” Mr DeSandoli relayed. His only wish was that it “stayed fluffier for longer.”

Wintertime at Brentwood is a time to savour and I recommend that everyone try to get out and play in the snow as much as possible – it is a guaranteed snow-tastic time!
