Travel Requirements: Passport, Visa, Study Permit

Depending on the valid passport(s) your child holds as well as their primary residence, there will be specific official documents required to attend Brentwood and for travel during the school year. ​It is the parent’s responsibility to identify and secure these documents.

Once at Brentwood there may be an occasion where your child will travel within Canada or to the USA with a cultural, academic or athletic group. We ask that each student have a minimum of the required identification listed below under ​Travel Requirements​.

Travel Requirements

Canadian Citizens must have the following

• Valid Canadian passport

Canadian Permanent Residents must have the following:

• Valid passport
• Canadian Permanent Resident card
• Multiple Entry US Visitor’s Visa

Students from the USA must have all of the following:

• Valid USA passport
• Multiple entry Canadian Visa – contact Canadian Consulate or Embassy to confirm requirements
• Study permit (see below)

International Students ​(not from the USA)​ must have all of the following:

• Valid passport
• Multiple entry Canadian Visa – contact Canadian Consulate or Embassy to confirm requirements
• Multiple entry US visitor’s Visa or ESTA – contact US Immigration to confirm requirements
• Study permit (see below)

Parents

• Please be sure that as a parent you also have any required official documents prepared for your travel to accompany your child to Brentwood.

Study Permits

• It is the family’s responsibility to apply for and renew a study permit via the Canadian Embassy or Consulate.
• Brentwood will provide you with the official documents to support your application
• This is a mandatory requirement, regardless of the length of stay
• US students should not assume that the permit will be granted at the border

All students who do not have Canadian passport or who are not Permanent Residents must obtain a Study Permit. ​In most cases this process can now be completed online which we recommend as it is a much faster process.

Short Term (6 months or less)

Although the government site advises that you can proceed with a Visitor’s Visa for entry to study in Canada for 6 months or less, the Ministry of Education in BC requests all international students have a study permit.As a word of caution, there are ports of entry to Canada that will decline entry to a student if they cannot produce a valid study permit, irrespective of the duration of their intended stay.
