Carrying the Torch: Shaping Brentwood’s Future
Since 1923, the Torch has lit the way, carried from generation to generation as a symbol of purpose, possibility, and shared responsibility. As we enter our second century, we are kicking off Carrying the Torch: a year-long process of consultation and collaboration to create our next strategic plan. The process will shape the path ahead through the voices of those who know Brentwood best – students, alumni, faculty, staff, and parents. Together, we will chart a future that honours our legacy, reflects a changing world, and carries the school forward to thrive in the years ahead. De Manu In Manum.
Listening, Learning, and Leading—Together
At its heart, Carrying the Torch is about intention. It’s about asking—and answering—some of the most important questions we can pose as a community: Where are we now? Where do we want to go? And how do we get there?
Brentwood’s last strategic plan helped shape a decade of purposeful growth, guiding decisions around our programs, facilities, and student experience. But as we look to the future, we recognize that the world is shifting rapidly—from the role of technology in education, to the importance of belonging and wellbeing, to the evolving skills and values students need to thrive in a complex, interconnected world.
The Carrying the Torch process began with a commitment to listen deeply. Over the past several months, we’ve reached out to the full Brentwood community through surveys, focus groups, roundtable discussions, and interviews. Students, staff, parents, alumni, and board members have shared their experiences, voiced their hopes, and challenged us to think bigger and more boldly.
From there, working groups have been tasked with analyzing trends, examining internal data, and exploring best practices from leading institutions around the world. With guidance from experienced facilitators, our leadership team is now distilling this information into key themes that will shape the draft framework of the plan.
Ultimately, the final strategic plan will be more than a document—it will be a shared roadmap that reflects the aspirations of the entire Brentwood community. It will offer clarity around our mission, set bold goals, and ensure we are stewarding our resources wisely to support the people, programs, and place that make Brentwood unique.
The Road Ahead
The final plan will be shared later this academic year—but the journey doesn’t end there. Strategic plans are only powerful if they live in our daily decisions. That’s why Carrying the Torch will continue beyond publication, shaping how we lead, teach, and grow over the coming decade.
This is a moment of opportunity—not just to reflect on who we’ve been, but to dream together about who we want to become. We invite every member of the Brentwood community to engage, contribute, and carry the torch forward.
