Brentwood Bleeds Blue: Year Two

Wrapping up the first day of academic classes and revving up the start of the Interhouse Competition, Eco-Challenge, attracted the entire student body, and then some, to the Brentwood waterfront. With sunshine and Mt. Baker as the backdrop, returnees and new Brentonians all flocked together this past Friday for friendly rivalry designed to test ability and rugged endurance. Displaying newfound house strengths and weaknesses, every house had their first chance to cheer for or cooperate with each other toward a common goal: winning. Boy scouts finally found an event to shine up their badges for – shelter building or fire-starting — while swimmers embraced the numbing sea; any specialty was supported as the four competitive houses pitted against each other. Running, canoeing, paddle-boarding, portaging, singles and doubles kayaking, as well as those events previously mentioned, were all showcased in the annual relay race. Those who were not in the water or getting toasty were cheering and showing excellent, spirited support for their house, no matter its modest state. Like Hazel Grace fell for Augustus Waters, Hope-Privett vaulted from last to first “slowly, then all at once” (Green, John) with the help of Alex R, 16 leaving other runners in the dust and Andrew C’s exceptional orienteering management skills making up for the slow start in doubles kayaking. Actual merman, Sam S, emerged from the ocean, ringing the finishing bell with such ferocity that it, literally, broke, bringing all those donning blue or pink into first place. Coming in a gallant second place, Ellis-Mackenzie surged up to the broken bell while Alex-Whittall and Allard-Rogers came away with respectful 3rd and 4thplace finishes. A huge thanks goes out to Mr.Norman, the IT staff, parent volunteers, and the participants both in and out of the water for crafting a sensational kick-off for the sure-to-be-heated Interhouse competition and school year!
