Celebrating Debating

Before we all departed for our winter break, we had an eventful couple of weeks in Debate and we’re here to celebrate the successes of several members of our club. As many of you know, we hosted the Newman-FISA Debate Tournament here and we’d like to thank the over forty students – many of whom aren’t a part of club – and several teachers who gave up their entire Saturday to ensure the success of this prestigious event. The standard of debate was very high and we’d like to congratulate Kavi G for placing first in the Junior category. In the final week of term we travelled to Victoria to compete in the Golden Gnome Public Speaking and Debating competition. We’d like to congratulate Andrew W who placed 1st in the Golden Gnome Junior Public Speaking competition, and Maria F who placed second in the Senior category. Added to this, Delaney B and Alejandro G placed 1st in the Junior Debating competition and Afyz M and Deborah C placed 2nd. We are very proud of these four debaters and the fact that we fared so well when debating against students from so many great schools from all over the province. We’d like to also offer huge congratulations to Toria E who has been invited to join Afyz and Kavi in vying for a spot on the Canadian National Debate team. The BC provincial trials will take place in two weeks. Finally we’d like to wish all debaters good luck at the Vancouver Island Regional Debate Tournament, which will take place next Friday.
