An annual event, the Brentwood blood clinic once again demonstrated the dedication of the members of our community. On February 3rd, 38 units of blood were collected from 61 donors, including students, staff, and our very own Mr. Bud Patel. Although a significant number of donors were unable to donate due to traveling to malaria risk zones, thank you to everyone who readily volunteered. To the many first time donors, some whom I’m sure were scared or nervous, thank you for your courage. I would also like to thank Mrs. Felix and the Canadian Blood Services for providing us with this opportunity to make a positive difference. A car accident can require up to 50 units of blood. An organ transplant can require up to 100 units. Cancer treatment can require as much as eight units per week. Brentwood alone has provided cancer treatment for about five patients for one week. With the blood supply low across the nation, the need for blood is increasingly urgent and I am proud to be part of a community that readily meets this need head on.
