Busy Bees at Brentwood Regatta
With the sun hiding behind fluffy grey clouds and the for-loomed sweet sounds of 6am wake-ups, the community is revved up for the 45th Annual Brentwood International Rowing Regatta. Only an hour out of classes, with a trickle of rain on their backs, every student is manoeuvring about the crowded estate, engrossed in their various activities; from running Entrepreneurship 11 booths, including Boathouse Poutine and Babushka’s Perogies, to holding the future champion’s boat while white waves break, the campus is soaked with energy. “I don’t even care about the weather at this point; if it’s going to rain, let it. Not that I could do anything to stop it. I don’t control the weather. How much is a Dragon Cake?” JiWon K, Alex ’15 mused on the crowded plaza—they’re free if bought with the $4 sauce. What a deal. In Poseidon’s domain, a sea of oars and screaming coxies flood Mill Bay as several races occur simultaneously and the combined nymphs of Brentwood and competitors from across Canada work harder than kittens chasing laser-pointers. “I haven’t slept in days, due to anticipation,” said a sweating, crying Toby CH, Privett ’15. Whether one finds a day of medals or Beaver Tails, the ambience by the water has invigorated every flipper; besides the evasion on Saturday school, Brentwood students can look forward to a stream of live performances, 165 races, a Friday night dance, and another social the following evening as they offer their hospitality to the 1640 visiting athletes.
