Breathtaking Melodies

Silent vastness fills the air with no motion to be seen. Ms. Anabel Wind’s eyes meet every single one of us and we straighten up, ready to play. She counts under her breath, “One, two, three, four”. As soon as her hand comes down on the four, musical notes fills the air. People are drawn in further as we play and they are trapped underneath the notes, unable to come out. We head towards the last note and end the piece looking at each other with a hint of a knowing smile. We finished well. Last Wednesday, our Strings Ensemble made our way down to Victoria. We arrived early enough to tune up and practice our three pieces, Winter, Fantasia and Arioso with no one in the room. Then, an orchestra, four times larger than our group, came in and started tuning up. We were in awe at how many people there were, but managed to convince ourselves that we were as good as them. Our time to shine came sooner than we thought. We picked up our strings and headed on stage. We started to play and Devon S, Mack ‘15, a cellist, led the other two cello players into the start of Winter with a sharp staccato. Paul L, Whittall ‘15 playing the viola, joined smoothly and built richness into the music, followed by the first and second violins bringing the music to a thick richness of notes with beautiful melodies. We played the other songs with Paul L, Whittall ’15 as soloist in Fantasia. This festival was a unique experience for us to strive forward into the future. The next time we are playing is on the Concert for A Summer’s Day in early June. Seo Young R, Alex ‘17
