"Defence wins championships" is a much repeated cliche, but it is also more true than any other factor in competitive sports. The Girls Rugby team this year believed in this most basic of concepts more than any other. Physically outsized by many of our opponents, the players learned that if they were technically accurate and took care of the "hard yards" business that is uncompromising defence, then, as a team, they would create turnovers and turn defence into attacking opportunities. It was this self-belief that led to a wonderful season for the team. Superbly led by Captain Brooklyn N and inspired by the outstanding attacking and defensive skills of Ciel A-B and Shannyn O, the team developed a cohesive and complimentary style of play that was high tempo, creative and very exciting. Anita A was a devastating defender with an immense work rate, and Grade 11s Avi S and McKenna H put their rep rugby experiences to good use as a dynamic #9/10 combination. Newcomer Denise R enjoyed an excellent season, benefitting from the time and space the players getting her the ball created. The end result was a Provincial 7s Championship, a Provincial 15s Championship and an undefeated season. Immense credit must go to all of the players, and to my co-coaches coaches Steve Cowie and Dave Grisdale, whose creative input and unwavering belief in our players was inspiring. The 2015 Girl’s Rugby team represented their school with pride and humility and have been an absolute privilege to coach. Thank you!
