Junior Boys Rowing – All About the Attitude

Junior Boys Rowing – All About the Attitude

The prospect of coaching Junior Boys is often feared amongst the coaching staff. The rambunctious attitude of these lads towards rowing can, however, be an advantage in the hands of the right coach. This year Mr. Carr stepped up to the challenge. With Lion T and Peter L coming off a strong 2014 season, they welcomed Novices and new students into the program with open arms. In the six regattas the lads raced at, they showed extraordinary courage and gave their everything in every race.  Distinguished results included Gold at the Brentwood Regatta in the 4x+ and the 2x, and in the 8+ and 4x at Shawnigan Regatta. Max V, coming late in the year from Austria, decided to give rowing a try. He shocked everyone with his incredible power as well as his quick learning, earning the respect of coaches and athletes alike. Our resident leprechaun, Aidan W, showed impressive strength considering his size, and was able to aid novices and experienced rowers alike in their quest for technical perfection. Oliver Wilson, who gained a late entry into the Junior Eight, almost instantaneously earned the respect of his crew through his uplifting attitude and sheer grit.  Daniel L’s experience and determination earned him a well-deserved place in two seat, his desire for success fueling everyone else’s will to win. After being plucked from the Recreational Rowing Program to be introduced to the Junior Boys crew, Derek A’s never-ending pursuit for that perfect catch gave all of the lads something to strive for. Cameron W’s strength and power placed him in the “engine room” of the eight, playing a key part of the formula for success in rowing. Mason S, who rowed alongside Oliver W in the Junior Double, made astounding improvements over the course of the year, becoming an impressive sculler and providing much needed depth to the team.  It was an auspicious year. Thanks to our coaches, Mr. Brian Carr, Mr. Beatty, Mr. Tony Carr & Mrs. Whitney for their expertise and enthusiasm.  Peter L, Whittall ‘17 & Aidan W, Ellis ‘17
