It Took Long Enough

It Took Long Enough

We did it. After years and years of assignments, homework, tests, exams, grades, redos, summer school, and the occasional 100%—we did it. We graduated. Oh, wait a second, there’s still a month left of school, including exams. So we aren’t quite done it, but we’re well on our way there (as long as everyone refrains from rolling those dice just a little bit longer). On Friday, May 16 the 2015 Grad Class rolled out of Brentwood, dresses and suits in hand, ready to board the ferry and attend the annual Graduation in Vancouver. We arrived, spent hours (or the girls did) agonizing over hair and makeup, and finally emerged from our rooms to a hall full of over dressed and elated parents and students. The atmosphere at the Bayshore was one of excitement—parent’s hands eagerly clenching cameras set to automatic in a frantic attempt to snap pictures of their own child, while capturing every kid that walked by wearing the same color. After introductions and pictures drew to a close, parents settled down for dinner and students gathered behind the doors to the hall, organizing themselves into their walk-up groups. Despite missing a beloved sleep-in to practice this, most people joined their groups one or two moments before they were required, but everyone made it onto the stage without incident. Squished close to friends and foe alike, we stood before our proud parents. It was our moment, all 154 of us, of fame. As the last students took their place on the stage, the room took a pause, a hiatus, before the eager parents savagely closed in, cameras raised high, lights flashing, and if we had not known any better I would have said a massacre was about to take place. Concluding this adrenaline-spiking event, we took our seats and listened as Mr. Collis delivered his speech. We laughed even harder as our parents laughed, without knowing the joke’s context, and then had to have us explain the context, and explain that Damian was not, in fact, his son.   Concluding the event, the Grad Class departed, ready to explore the world (or at least the streets of Vancouver) as almost adults, almost free, almost graduated.
