In May Brentwood sent a group of four debaters to compete at the BC Qualifiers debate competition held at the University of British Columbia. This event was a tryout for a chance to go to Ontario and vie for a spot on the Canadian High School Debate Team. With 24 highly skilled debaters from all over the province in attendance, the competition was fierce. At this provincial tournament, Kavi G, Whittall ’17, Afyz M, Privett ’17 & Toria E, Alex ’17 participated in three rigorous, competitive rounds of debate and Delaney B, Allard ‘17 would have too, if she didn’t originate from the province past the Rocky Mountains.Be it resolved that geographic discrimination is abhorent! Times were tense, especially with the tough competition, yet Brentwood competed impressively in a newly-learned debate format called “Worlds Style.” Additionally, all of us were fortunate enough to learn from other debaters and make new friends from other schools. After three long and draining impromptu debates, the students were ready to head home. But before we packed our bags, the semi-finalists were announced and Kavi was lucky enough to be one of them. After an intense semi-final round, Brentwood narrowly missed out on qualifying for the finals. But the debaters didn’t hang their heads since all of them are only in Grade 10 and have many more chances to compete at this tournament again.  And so, tired, but still cheerful, the Brentwood contingent rushed back to the hotel to pick up our bags and then boarded the ferry with Greek food in hand. All this debating success wouldn’t be possible without the time and commitment of our dynamic coaches, Ms. Steele-MacInnis & Mr. Bryant. Much richer for the experience, the club remains resolved.
