Junior Colts Kick Off 1

The Brentwood Junior Colts had their first rugby games on Thursday, playing St Michael’s University School and Shawnigan Lake School in a round-robin jamboree afternoon. Most of our boys were playing their first games of rugby, and what a privilege for a coach to witness. The mouth guards were still warm from the molding, boots and blisters, and the starched jersey, tag on the collar. Nerves: the warm-up is like practice so nothing new there, though the mind wanders to the prospect of tackling and fast running and sheer physicality. Despite the coaches’ remonstrations, the eyes wander to the opposition, who seem, to a man, bigger than us. But once the whistle blows and each boy warms to his task, he finds strength. Jack, the youngest in the group, scores twice; Ridge runs hard; Toren finds space and Keaton shows gas; Michael L is a tackling machine and Declan battles bravely. No one keeps score.
