Ms. Murtland Hits Mill Bay: Our New Head of Academics

Ms. Murtland, our new Director of Academics, is hurriedly and excitedly adjusting to the busy life that is being a Brentonian. Meeting students, coaching cross training, and leading Head of department Meetings, she is happily (and exhaustedly) adjusting to her new place here at the school. Hailing from nearby Victoria, she is excited to have the prospect of expanding her career in a boarding school environment. Her first few weeks have shown her what a community Brentwood can be, and she is excited to see all of the students succeed in whatever her or his passion is, whether it’s arts, sports or academics. Coming from a small town, Ms. Murtland is loving the feeling of living in a small place paired with a tight knit community feeling, all while being fairly close to her family. Ms. Murtland teaches and oversees a variety of things, including cross training, which allows her to be active and take part in something extracurricular that she enjoys. On top of that, she teaches Geography 12, but her most prominent role in the Brentwood community is being the newly appointed Director of Academics. In that role, Ms. Murtland oversees all academic courses, including any introduction of new or reinvented courses. She will also be working with all department heads and teachers in order to better the academic program here at Brentwood. Assessment periods, such as exam week in June, will also be advised and constructed by her. One of Ms. Murtland’s primary goals is to help Brentwood, specifically Brentwood’s students, create an academic vision. She will be working with this year’s Student Academic Council to help improve students’ academic experience, and try to achieve the vision that she and students will create. If you ever see Ms. Murtland walking around campus, whether it be running with the Cross Training crew, in the library, or in the classroom, please give her a warm Brentwood welcome.
