Run For The Cure 1
7:40am, three bus loads of students, and a Sunday! What could possibly have that many Brentonians awake that early? Run for the Cure, of course; walk for the cure if you are more into that. Brentwood has raised more than $10,000 so far and there is still the rest of October to fundraise.
Arriving at the University of Victoria at 8:30am, there were heartfelt speeches made from fellow sponsors, researchers, and survivors. After some moving speeches, it was our turn to start moving: everybody’s favorite type of warm-up, jazzercise. Yes, a mix of jazz and exercise. At 9am and there is a survivor’s parade in honor of current fighters and survivors. On to the hard part! A five-kilometer run or a one-kilometer walk. There is support along the way from volunteers cheering you on and holding out their hands for some high-fives. Halfway, a water station is set up to keep participants hydrated. After the running/walking is completed, Thrifty’s Food has snacks set out: chocolate milk, oranges, bananas, and cookies. Not a bad way to finish off one’s morning exercise. Ending the Running for the Cure around 10am means that there is still time for everybody to attend Brentwood’s famous Sunday Brunch, and this one was well deserved by these three bus loads. Not only did every single Brentwood participant come out with the best attitude and support for the run, but the Brentwood community won the award for the school that fundraised the most. “Brentwood Busts Cancer.”
I, as well as many others, am extremely proud of this year’s Run for the Cure and can only hope that next year will be even better. A big thank you to all who helped out in organizing yet another successful fundraising event for a great cause. Georgia P, Mackenzie ‘16
