Mrs. Quinton has completed casting the Senior Play, Carlo Goldoni’s “The Servant of Two Masters” which will be presented April 20-23 in the Killy Theatre. Hilarity abounds in this madcap Italian comedy of lovers, lawyers, servants, and twenty-seven plates of meatballs. Betrothed couple Silvio (Alex D) and Clarice (Holly CH) are devastated when a previous fiancé reappears, back-from-the-dead. In this wild farce, things and people are not what they seem – disguises, traps, and tricks produce a whirlwind of mass confusion. At the center of this mirth is Truffaldino (Michael G), the scheming – and perpetually hungry – servant who concocts a zany scheme to double his wages (and his meals) by serving two masters at once. This 18th Century commedia dell’arte masterpiece, hilariously adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher and Paolo Emilio Landi includes a play within the play, pop culture allusions and local references. The actors are late because they missed their ferry from Horseshoe Bay. Once they set up the set and don their costumes, the play begins, but not without many diversions from the original script. The actors break character, improvise, talk to the audience; a tacky commercial opens the second act and plenty of slapstick humour, physical gags, stage falls and chase scenes fill the stage. It’s fun for the whole family.
