Listening to Our Genome

Last Saturday, Biology 12 students were treated to a lecture by Emeritus Professor Dr. Ed Ishiguro of the University of Victoria. The topic, "What we have learned from the Human Genome" touched on many of the possible benefits of modern DNA research such as the ability to predict individual health patterns, to detect and prevent cancer, or to genetically modify our food sources.

Our own human origins are now much more accurately known and even the percentage of DNA we share in common with Neanderthals can now be measured. The doors to a brave new world of scientific seem to be opening wide and the lecture left us with many questions that Dr. Ishiguro himself is wondering about.

We look forward to another visit from this award-winning scientist to help us explore these issues further.
