Senior 2nd XI & Junior A Field Hockey

Contrary to a prevailing opinion, I am confident to say that field hockey at Brentwood is not a dying sport. Even though girls are able to choose a myriad of other sports and there is no artificial turf on campus, many girls chose to play field hockey for the first time. Returning from a long hiatus, I was excited to coach a group of young ladies forming two teams, a Senior Second XI and a Junior A team. The Senior team was anchored securely by several girls who were also invited to play on the First 11 when they needed support in tournaments. These girls continued to learn their craft, develop more skills, and increase their knowledge of the game. The team had the opportunity to play in an ISA tournament very early in the season and played several games against schools fielding development teams. With each turf practice and games on both water-based and rubber turfs, there was a marked improvement in team play. Honoree Captain of the team was Romelia O, a beginner who showed enthusiasm for the game and became Captain because she was the ‘grand ole lady’ on the team. The goalkeeper for both teams was Megan A. It also made sense to form a Junior A team to play as a viable unit to prepare them as the feeder team for the First X1. The majority of the players were beginners or playing in their second season. Anchored by Jemma O as centre mid with Sofia GP and Kayla B on either side, the team was impressive on offense and defense. The defense was held strong by Antara P (Captain), Aidan M & goalie Megan A (Assistant Captain). The forward line was young and inexperienced but they continued to play hard and develop new skills. Playing in three tournaments saw them well placed in each one. Both teams were dedicated to learn the ‘Whitney Way’ and improved in all aspects of the game. This all bodes well for next year.
