Fall Hockey – Road to the Ross Cup

The weather is turning cold and wet in Mill Bay. Winter is rapidly approaching, and the possibility of a snow day at Brentwood slowly looms closer and closer. Fortunately enough, these conditions are correspondent with the emergence of hockey season, the best part of the cold winter months. And at Brentwood, the team is well underway practicing for the gritty year of hockey that they have ahead. This term, the hockey boys have been hard at work. The goal is to be in the best shape as a team by the time our Showcase game, and our year-end Ross Cup Tournament, come along. Through early morning practices, or Coach Robinson’s Saturday workouts, it is all part of the process. A lot of time will be spent towards that goal, tuning the powerplay, polishing defensive-zone coverage, and trying to inch closer towards becoming that unified, well-oiled machine the coaches hope to see. In the meantime, the team is trying to develop chemistry between the new guys. As an especially young team with a lot of turnover from last year, some might have been worried there would be a few kinks to work out in the system. But as Nick C, Ellis ‘22 suggests, “I like hockey this term because on the team we’re all friends and we all like playing with each other.” The transition into this new team has been pretty seamless so far. Luckily enough, the boys were buzzin’ to start the year, fresh off a 6-4 exhibition victory against Cowichan last Thursday. It might have been unexpected, but the strong start can be attributed to a determined effort the team made from the get-go. The team hopes to echo this trait with their moto “relentless”, and be hard to play against because of that never-give-up mentality. Soon, Term 2 will arrive with the competitive season in tow, and the boys intend on being ready. If anyone enjoys a bit of an underdog story, come out anytime and watch the group of skillful young-gun rookies and a few seasoned veterans hoping to lead the team to future success. It’ll be a good year, and the players are excited to see what the rest of the 2019-2020 Brentwood hockey season has in store. Jack P, Whittall ‘20
