Volleyball : Junior A Girls compete in Island Championships.
The Junior A girls volleyball team competed in the Island Championships on the weekend, the games being played here at Brentwood. The top eight teams on the Island competed in the two day tournament. After round-robin play, the tenacious Brentwood team finished fourth overall, playing outstanding matches against Vanier School (17-25, 26-24 and 11-15) and Belmont School (22-25 and 19-25). In the first game of the playoffs, Brentwood was matched against powerhouse Timberline School and the scores did not reflect how well the girls played, as the team made Timberline work for every point. After losing this match, the girls went on to play Highland (12-25, 26-24, 3-15) and fought hard to make it to the 5th/6th place match. The girls were very disappointed after this match but held their heads high and entered the 7th/8th place match with determination and drive to win it. Early in the first game of this match, starting setter and captain Erica Mayer had to leave the game due to a very sudden illness. Back-up setter Mairi Horth stepped in to run the offence but, in trying to re-group, the team could not quite finish as strongly as they had hoped and came in 8th place (15-25 and 22-25). Nevertheless, it was a very successful year for the team and they look forward to playing together next year!
