Mother’s Day

This past Sunday, Brentwood celebrated Mother’s Day. Although it has already occurred in some countries, Sunday gave Brentwood students another chance to express their love and eternal gratitude to their mums.
Mother’s Day transcends religion, language, and ethnicity; it is a universal holiday. Originally it was founded as a celebration of women, during the feminist movement in the United States. It was officially established in 1914 by Anna Jarvis, who later grew frustrated with the increasing commercialization of the holiday. Mother’s Day is one of the most commercially successful holiday in the United States, a fact that would send its founder out into the streets in protest.
But despite its commercialization it is still a significant occasion. It is an important day to remember your mother, and to express thanks to all mothers for their role in nurturing and shaping society.
Although being at Brentwood meant many couldn’t spend the day with their mums, Facebook was flooded with messages saying “I love you” and “Thank You”. If, however, you deprived your mum of a telephone or Skype call, remember it is never too late.
