Robotics in Mill Bay

A week last Wednesday, Mr. Scott Doehler’s Creative Science class and a number of other interested students were treated to a lecture on Artificial Intelligence by an expert in the field, Dr. Alexandra Albu. Dr Albu is a research scientist and lecturer in the Engineering and Computer Science faculties at the University of Victoria. Her particular area of interest is in designing “computers that see”. Visual recognition programs have many applications in medicine, surveillance and robotics.

Dr. Albu discussed the broader implications of such advances in technology as well as giving us a flavor of the kinds of research projects that her PhD students are engaged with, many of them industry related. Our engineers of the future were encouraged to consider the possibilities available to them in this fast growing sector of our increasingly high tech world. This was Dr. Albu’s third visit to our campus and she has invited some senior students to pay a return visit to her lab at UVic.

Next year, Brentwood will offer an academic elective in robotics for students to explore these areas more fully and in the arts afternoon a senior creative science option will be available for our students to delve into the project-based world of creative engineering. Continued collaboration with post- secondary teachers will be an important element in these new initiatives.
