All You Need Is Love

As any summer-loving teenager would tell you, the best nights are always spent in the blazing heat with friends that we know, and friends we will know. The memorable days are the days when the sunshine hits our golden skin, which we swear to our parents is covered in SPF30.

Now tell me, what would be better than a night outside with friends to celebrate a new school year and reflect on summer highlights?  

As the equinox quickly approaches, the girls of Mackenzie House partook in a traditional welcome back barbecue to play games, gorge in yummy food and savor the last few rays of sunshine. And although the sun had gone astray, our spirits were very much in attendance and the barbecue was relocated into the McNeill Student Center in Crooks hall.

It all looks the same with a fabulous pair of sunnies, and some catchy summer tunes.

Seating arrangements were divided into groups that Mackenzie House has deemed “Mack Fams”. Clusters of girls from every grade come together under the wings of three or four Grade 12 “Mack Mamas” to bond and interact. The events of the night included a creative talent performance in which there were many acrobatic moves, and dance steps, with the winning team singing an impressive interpretation of the Beatles’, “All You Need is Love”.

All you need is love; love is all you need.

The night ended with the singing of Mackenzie’s trademark “I Won’t Give Up” and a few group photos to immortalize the night.  

It is evenings like these that give me shivers of pride to be a Mackenzie girl. I speak for all of the Grade 12s when I say that getting the younger girls of the house to share giggles, and participate in silly performances, is just about the best feeling ever. It’s all about creating an atmosphere with a sense of family and a place that the girls can call a second home.  

Now! Fall is approaching and the sunshine is getting a little lazier, the leaves a little crispier. It has been a few weeks since the new Brentonians have set their nervous little footsteps on this crazy, beautiful place. The seniors have put on their huge Grade 12 shoes, and guess what?

The shoes fit just right and we’re all doing just fine. Actually, we’re doing fantastic.
