Mapping the Road to Victory

The Killy Theatre is filled almost to the brim, an unusual sight on a Friday evening. Students flood the rows, animatedly chatting with their neighbours as seats are consumed by masses of greens, blues, reds and oranges. Davin K steps up to the microphone and almost instantly the theatre is full of vibrating, excited silence.

On stage there are eight students: four girls facing their four male counterparts. Each student is representing their house to compete in a new interhouse competition: the cutthroat and fast-paced Geography Challenge.

Davin calls the first question and the quest for glory is underway.

Full of malicious multiple choice options and onerous open enders, the Geography Challenge tested contestants’ quick wits and knowledge of the world around them. As cards were flipped, answers were jotted and Sharpies were unsheathed; the leaders of the Global Studies world battled for top spot. After 31 questions, filled with answers such as Brunai, Suq, mercantilism and Chuck Norris’s castle, the junior showdown was over. The combined total of the teammates gave Mackenzie and Ellis their first victory in the interhouse competition this year, as they narrowly beat out Rogers and Allard. Privett and Hope claimed third while Whittall and Alex brought up the rear.

The senior faceoff kicked into action shortly after the juniors cleared the stage. Highlighted by Lexi M’s thoughtful chin stroking, MackEllis pulled away from the pack early on, and wrapped up the night with two wins. Rogers and Allard battled Privett and Hope for silver, but were eventually overtaken and earned third place for their efforts. Whittall and Alex finished strongly in fourth place.

An unexpected but welcome surprise was the Green Lake Rowing Club’s attendance at the event. Green Lake brought up many of its novice and varsity crews to train with our Brentwood rowers this past weekend, and many came with loud voices and encouragement for our Geography Challenge contestants.
