Debaters Begin Competitive Season

The first Brentwood Novice Debate Tournament was a resounding success; two rounds of Cross-Examination and Canadian Nationals style took place in 15 classrooms distributed between the new Arts building and the third floor of the Ross Centre this past Friday.

Six island schools sent 106 fledgling speakers to hone their burgeoning skills by debating the idea of whether the United Nations should intervene in sovereign nation governments. Judges included senior Brentwood debaters, staff and volunteers from the local community. Our own Grade nines were moderators, timekeepers and greeters, who evidenced "top drawer" behavior for our visitors.

At the end of the night, there were awards for four of the schools, but Brentwood placed the top of the heap in most cases. Whether this was because many of the judges were from our community, or whether our well-prepared novices earned their accolades will be the subject of much debate. 😉
