This weekend, 11 representatives debated, deliberated and delivered speeches at the Vancouver Model United Nations. Discussing issues such as environmental security, poverty, Canadian topics and midnight crises, each delegate represented the view of their nation and presented solutions to each situation. The weekend was packed with interesting events and lots of work, leaving every delegate exhausted, yet full of enthusiasm for diplomacy.

VMUN opened with a stirring speech by the Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire, a leader of relief and peacekeeping efforts during the Rwandan genocide of the 1990s. Brentwood was involved in committees including the Historical Chinese Crisis with Zhi-yao C, NATO with Jonathan H and Jiwon K, the House of Commons with Calvin S as the Prime Minister (he’s kind of a big deal), the Security Council with Nick W, and the EU with Kevin D.

The delegates enjoyed much more than political intrigue. We ate at Japanese restaurants, oyster bars, and the perennial favorite, the Cactus Club. Brentwood students in their councils faced staunch arguments from opposing countries, unrivalled support from their fellow political parties, and crises continuing until three in the morning.

Several Brentwood students distinguished themselves with individual awards. Fischer W earned an Honorable Mention while Sarah M and Calvin S each picked up Best Delegate on their committees. Happy 16th Fischer!

It was an educational and exciting weekend for Brentwood students and Ms. Reynolds, who learned about the strong correlation between opening prohibited fire exit doors and blaring alarms sounding late into the night. 😉
