Tennis Opens Season with Silver
Brentwood College set itself up for a crack at the season opening tournament, the annual Franco Biondo Championship, but couldn’t quite bring home the big prize.
Hosted by Shawnigan Lake School, the tournament is dedicated to longtime coach and tennis enthusiast, Franco Biondo, who had coached both Brentwood and Shawnigan over 30 years, for his dedication to the students, his passion for tennis, and his sense of humour.
Our opening game was a showdown between two powerhouses of BC tennis, top AA school Brentwood College vs. top AAA schools St. Georges/Crofton House. It was a dream start as we narrowly beat St. George’s/Crofton 6-5 thanks to the clutch performances by Conrad A and Paranat T. After this narrow victory, Brentwood cruised its way to the final, earning wins over Frances Kelsey, Terry Fox and the host Shawnigan Lake School with strong performances by Amanda M, Johanna H, Andjela S, Georgia C, Santiago G & Nick M. In the final, it was a Brentwood, St. Georges/Crofton rematch. This time, St. George’s/Crofton had their revenge; Brentwood came short as we were narrowly defeated 6-5. Even though we came short in the final, this tournament proved to be an excellent opportunity for our varsity to compete and gain experience. It was promising start! Minh C, Ellis ‘13
