As boats were loaded, riggers checked, and busses packed, the Shawnigan Lake School prepares to host its own regatta. On Saturday, May 11th and Sunday, May 12th, 83 rowers psyched themselves up to compete, along with other crews, against Brentwood’s rival, Shawnigan Lake School. Friday was spent rigging boats and prepping them for the races bright and early Saturday morning.

“It was a good time” said Jack H. “On Friday we rigged boats and had a laugh enjoying the nice weather and preparing to go on the water. We got our first feel for the regatta and got ready to compete.”

“I wish the weather would have been nicer on Saturday. I was bummed that our last regatta in the west coast wasn’t as good as it could have been” said Reid A. Yet despite the rain and the wind, Reid, along with Alex R, Noah C, and Jordan S rowed their way to an impressive 2nd place finish in the final. “It was an eye opener for sure, especially for the lightweight four. It showed our potential for future races and it has given us an idea of our competition” Reid continued.

“We didn’t exactly have high expectations so I was surprised with the final outcome for all of the crews.” Max D exclaimed, “I was rowing a double with Lane H in a 2000m novice junior men’s race. We had little experience in a double (it was only our tenth time on the water together) so to achieve something like 5th out of 30 crews is quite amazing!” Lane H explained. “2000m is a long way and it taught me a lot about my rowing capacities and has told me to just stick with it.”

Everyone was ecstatic with the final results of the regatta. With a total of 6 Gold medals, 5 Silvers, 3 Bronzes and countless heat wins, Brentwood had reason to celebrate.

“We represented ourselves and Brentwood well; we had an amazing outcome and I am proud of our guys. We had great races and proved that Brentwood is one of the better crews on the water” Reid A stated proudly. “It was an awesome regatta! A great way to end the year” says Brendon K. “There was good representation going on there.”

It was a strong way to finish off the season. For most, this was their last regatta of the year, and they should be proud that they went out with a bang. Congratulations to the rowers for their outstanding performance at the SLS regatta and to a great way to end an awesome year.
