What an interesting start to the second day of racing in St. Catharines. The wind that has been with us since Tuesday reached a peak speed of 60km per hour this morning at 9:00am. The races were shut down – a wind delay that is well recognized by any crew who has raced at Brentwood Regatta; however I cannot remember the last time that our regatta has been on delay for this long. The bigger question is how do we get all the races done??? The Brentwood crew decided that I (Mrs. Sage) should go and help the regatta officials organize the rest of the day but instead the rest of the coaches and I spent the day trying to keep the rowers busy. So the question begs: How do you entertain 41 rowers that are ready to race but cannot? The options we came up with: 1. Homework 2. Shopping for food 3. Snacking 4. Watching TV 5. Outlet Mall Shopping 6. Rides on the antique carousal in Port Dalhousie 7. Wading in Lake Ontario 8. Dance party in the hallway 9. Waiting for the “new” schedule to be updated 10. Visiting with parents who are here to “watch races” 11. Prepping for races (that are then put on hold again) 12. Trying to organize dinner for 48 people when you have no clue when dinner will be 13. Senior boys versus junior boys charades. What does this mean for the rest of the regatta schedule? Not even Brentwood coaches can fix this. We will wait for the regatta organizers to come up with plan D. It looks like it will be an early morning of racing on Sunday, with crews advancing to finals from their heat times on Friday. Racing finally resumed at 6:00pm tonight after a delay of 9 hours. The races were shortened to 1000m and ran at 4 minute intervals. This made for some fast times and very high stroke rates. Not all the races were completed and the Senior Boys 8+ will touch the water for the first time this regatta at 7:32am on Sunday morning. Brentwood has qualified 7 crews out of 15 possible races.
