As the entire school engages in end-of-year exams this week, Inigo O and Kennedy G reflect back on the AP exams that were written by many of our senior students in May. From the 6th to 13th of May the eyes of many students were glued to their books and studying consumed the campus – AP exams were in process. Some Grade 11s and at least half of our Grade 12s took one or more AP exams. AP stands for Advanced Placement. These courses are available to students at Brentwood whose academic lights shine brightly. The students that chose these courses are eager for a more challenging academic level than the normal non-AP classes. The intent of these courses is to allow gifted students to earn university level credits while still at Brentwood. Not only does this allow students to save time and money in their post-Brentwood education, it also allows them to get a competitive edge on their peers. Available to all senior students, the AP courses are an attractive part of the academic opportunity that Brentwood offers. These exams are externally marked and then given a grade between 1 and 5. The majority of this talented group of Brentwood students receives a 3, 4 or 5 as their mark. Students describe the AP exam experience as “quite thrilling”. This is because the courses typically require 2 years to complete and often count as credit for university. Although these exams are very challenging, with commitment, discipline, confidence, sleep, food and determination – you will be successful. The commitment to these courses is huge, but if students are willing to put in the time and effort, they will be successful and help themselves shape their future.
