Girls’ Rowing

The 2012-13 rowing season was full of rainy days, sunshine, and a lot of hard work. From the first art block of the year, the veterans and the novices were committed to rowing. First term was a blast! The Mill Bay sun was shining, new rowers trained with experienced girls, and new friendships were created. In this learning and developing term we always managed to get in a good workout even if the boats weren’t perfectly set and catching crabs was a common occurrence. The dreaded second term came and the short, dark, and rainy days were no surprise. We became very familiar with the erg. Ms. Sage and Mr. Wismer’s leg-burning erg workouts helped us to keep developing our rowing fitness. Spring Break came and some of our rowers were off to California to train and improve. Third term is Regatta season. As a women’s program, we raced against some of the best high school and club teams in the country. Racing against Shawnigan, St. Michaels, Claremont and VCRC was certainly never easy, but it was always thrilling and competitive. No matter how many ribbons or medals we earned this season, we were all very successful. From learning how to row, to bonding as a crew, to competing at St. Catharines and earning both Bronze and Silver medals, the memories and achievements we have are something to be proud of. Yes, there may have been days when we complained that we had too much homework or were too tired to row, but in the end we always pulled together. Thank you, Ms. Sage, Mr. Wismer, Mr. Wood and Mr. Norwood for a great season. We couldn’t have done it without you. Good luck next year! Love, Ailish Tinney, Allard ’13, Girls’ Captain
