Senior Boys Basketball

The Senior Boys Basketball team played some of their best hoops of the year at the Island Championships at Lambrick Park this past weekend. In the opening round, the team played a talented and athletic team from John Barsby in Nanaimo.  Despite a few unconventional turnovers, the team settled down and played some excellent defense to hold off the Barsby team for a 62-58 win. Paul L led the way with 16 pts and Harrison B chipped in 14.  In the semi-final contest, Brentwood played well but could not hold off #1 provincially ranked Lambrick Park. Nonetheless, the team played extremely hard and set the right tone for the games they would need to win on Saturday.  On Saturday morning Brentwood faced a physical team from Kwalikum SS.  Thanks to some excellent defensive pressure and terrific outside shooting, the team jumped out to a 20 point first half lead and never looked back as we closed with a 66-50 win. Leading the way was sharp shooter Skyler R with 19 points (including 6 for 7 from long range!) Paul L also contributed 16 pts and 4 steals in the win.  This set up a game with a very strong team from Highland with a berth to provincials on the line.  After going down 9-0 to start the game, the team responded beautifully and played excellent basketball for the next three-and-a-half quarters and led by 8 with just five minutes to play. Unfortunately, it was not enough as Highland made big shots down the stretch while the Brentwood team went ice cold. Devin C led the Brentwood squad with 18 pts and 10 rebs in their final game. Nonetheless, it was an excellent performance by the boys and, though a disappointing loss, it marked the end of a successful season. The coaches are very proud of the boys and particularly grateful for the contributions of Grade 12s Aidan C, Frank Z, Kadon R, Woody L and, of course, Captain Harrison B.  With a strong core group returning next season, we look forward to getting back to work!
